English for Obstetrics is a course for students with A2/B1 level of English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It is specifically aimed at students of midwifery at university level in Bulgaria but is also appropriate for trainee and practising obstetricians and gynaecologists who need to use the language more effectively at work and want to refresh their medical English.
The course book can be used selectively as a supplementary material by students of nursing, pharmacy, etc. who would like to extend their vocabulary and reinforce the grammar they know in English by working on texts and contexts directly related to health care professions.
The textbook consists of 12 units organized around topics of immediate relevance and interest to students and practitioners of midwifery and offers 30 to 50 contact hours of work. It contains various activities developing the receptive and productive psycholinguistic skills and strategies: reading, listening, writing and speaking. The tasks allow students to enrich their vocabulary in English as well as recycle and consolidate grammar typical for midwifery contexts. Some useful documents for developing students’ integrated skills have been included.
The authors have a long experience of teaching medical English and ELT methodology and have piloted the course book with students of midwifery for a couple of years.
